1. Take out a stick of hibi incense and press its top tip against the brown rough surface on the side of the box at an angle of 45 degrees, and strike diagonally down to light it as you would a regular match. Hold the stick at its mid-point to avoid it breaking.

2. Once the incense stick is ignited, hold on to the incense stick away from the flame in a slightly head down tilt position then in a horizontal position, and keep holding it until the flame spreads away from the head and onto the incense stick.At this point the flame will subside. If you extinguish the flame hastily before it settles, the fire may not spread to the incense or the smell of ignition material may affect the fragrance of the incense.

3. Lay the stick on the flame-retardant mat supplied and enjoy. The incense stick will burn for around 10 minutes. You can place the mat only with the box on a table, as the mat and tray are flame resistant. Don't leave the stick unattended until it has completely burned out. Burning more than 1 stick at a time is dangerous, as it will cause overheating of the mat.
